Background: The global population is rapidly aging, leading to an increase in the number of elderly individuals who are unable to care for themselves. Some of these individuals are considered for placement in nursing homes due to the lack of home care options. However, nursing homes consistently face severe shortages in caregivers. The introduction of remote, continuous wearable device technology for the ongoing monitoring of vital signs in nursing home residents may assist clinical staff in keeping track of physiological changes in residents, thereby providing timely and accurate care. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of remote, continuous wearable device technology in monitoring the health status of residents remains unproven and has been scarcely explored.
Purpose: To document the practical use of a remote continuous oximetry monitoring device in the clinical care of nursing home residents.
Method: A case study was conducted to collect information on the benefits of using remote continuous oximetry devices in 18 residents with low blood oxygen levels.
Result: The number of abnormal events detected by the 18 residents with oximetry monitoring devices was significantly higher and statistically significant (p=0.001) than the number of events recorded during the same period of time in conventional care.
Conclusion: The use of a remote continuous oximetry device is beneficial in assisting the clinical caregivers to provide the care needed by the resident at the appropriate time.
Keywords: Remote continuous oximetry monitoring device, Nursing home, Long-term care, Smart technology, digital health
