Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the association of the lifestyle and its changes with cognitive function among older adults.
Methods: The data were from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study of Aging (TLSA); the 2011 and the 2015 waves were used for this study. The participants who were aged 50 years old or more and completed both waves were included as the sample for this study (n=2409). The dependent variable was the 2015 cognitive function. The main independent variables were the 2011 lifestyle (including health behaviors, leisure activities engagement, social participation, and social support), and the changes between 2011 and 2015 changes of these variables. Descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis, and linear regression analysis were applied.
Results: The older adults who performed more cognitive leisure activities (β=0.031), more audiovisual leisure activities (β=0.041), provided more social support (β=0.071), and increased the provision of social support (β=0.045) were related to higher cognitive function. When stratified by gender, age, and education, the significant variables related to cognitive function were different.
Conclusions: Cognitive leisure activities engagement, audiovisual leisure activities engagement, providing social support, and increasement of providing social support may be beneficial for the cognitive function of older adults. It is recommended to participate in more activities and maintain an active lifestyle to maintain cognitive function for older adults.
