This study investigates the conceptual metaphors graduate international students from a medical university in northern Taipei utilize to describe their experiences with the Taiwanese and their home healthcare systems. By identifying and comparing the way international students metaphorically conceptualize healthcare systems, this study seeks to understand the meanings constructed by the participants and their relationship with healthcare systems. Through the use of thematic analysis, a metaphor identification procedure, and visuals to elicit metaphoric thinking in participants, the research presents an analysis of a data set composed of 17 interviews with international students from four continents. The study reveals that students conceptualize healthcare systems and their parts under two overarching themes, namely, Enhancers of healthcare use and Inhibitors of healthcare use. Each of these overarching themes had particular groups of metaphors attached to them. For instance, Enhancers of healthcare use included references to conceptual metaphors like MOTHER, HOME, or BROTHER, whereas Inhibitors of healthcare use included references to conceptual metaphors like FIGHT, BUSINESS, or BARRIERS. The study provides evidence of the connection between metaphoric thinking and action dispositions in healthcare system contexts.
