| 摘要: | Background: Bioethics plays a significant role throughout a doctor's professional journey, guiding them in analyzing ethical dilemmas and making decisions based on their personal values and moral conscience. Its application begins early in university classrooms, where students combine their vocational aspirations with their academic responsibilities. Starting from their initial encounters with life, illness, pain, death, and societal realities in anatomical amphitheaters and experimental laboratories with animals, and later in interactions with patients experiencing illness.
Methods: In order to achieve our objectives, we conducted a cross-sectional survey to assess the level of bioethics awareness among dentists in Ecuador. The survey was administered as a census at a dental clinic in Quito, Ecuador, and data collection took place between January 2023 and March 2023. For this research a total of 121 dentists were considered and 75 participated.
Findings: The study yielded several significant findings regarding the level of bioethics awareness among dentists in Ecuador. Professional experience and knowledge of Ecuadorian law were the two domains seen to have an association with bioethics awareness as they yielded a p-value of .003 and .000 respectively. The participants characteristics had no association with the level of bioethics awareness. There was sufficient evidence to suggest that some of the variables were correlated. Correlation was found between patient interaction and age (p-value=.030), professional experience and gender (p-value=.006), Credit hours and age (p-value=.036). Overall, 80.67% of the population demonstrated a high level of bioethics awareness.
Conclusion: This study provides valuable insight into the level of bioethics awareness among dentists in Ecuador and the factors that influence their understanding of ethical principles. While the overall awareness level was high, the findings suggest a need for continuous education and support to enhance dentists' ethical knowledge. These results can serve as a foundation for the development of targeted interventions and educational programs aimed at promoting ethical practices within the dental profession in Ecuador |
