In the area of sustainable development, there are growing concerns about the negative impact of carbon footprints on the environment. Carbon footprint reduction is not limited to governments or specific industries; it should be a joint effort of all stakeholders in all fields, including the healthcare sector and patients. There is growing awareness about the sustainability of the healthcare industry. Balancing patient care and safety with environmental impact is difficult but can be attempted.

As cell therapy is an innovative medical approach, it is crucial to deeply understand current, and potential challenges as cell therapy are developed and applied. Cell therapy is showing increasing promise in treating cancers, including gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, which are very prevalent and include cancers of the stomach, intestine, pancreas, colon, rectum, and other organs of the digestive tract. As medical treatments such as cell therapy become more and more promising, we pay more attention to the balance between treatment and environmental influence. As healthcare professionals and patients, we can change our processes and roadmaps to restructure the healthcare sector for a cleaner, greener future. Awareness of the balance between sustainability and proposing a vision and strategy for action.

Therefore, the goals of this study are to 1. share the positive outcomes of 23 GI cancer patients treated by cell therapy in a teaching hospital in Taiwan, 2. share the observation and lessons learned by applying the patient journey model to examine cell therapy treatment with both medical and sustainability perspectives, and 3. propose our framework and suggestions for achieving sustainability for medical professionals and healthcare leaders.
