摘要: Introduction: The burden of hearing problem as a silent disability could be prevented by modifying the risk factors and evaluating the hearing protection program. Hearing problem and hypertension awareness might be useful to alarm the hearing disturbance and poor quality of life due to disabling hearing loss. However, particularly in Indonesian population there was no current report regarding the prevalence and association between hearing problem and hypertension.
Objective: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of hearing problem and hypertension, also their relationship in Indonesian population, later we investigate the possible risk factors which associated with those relationship. Furthermore, we summarized the current characteristics of those variables in world’s population of working-age group based on previous studies within 22 years.
Methods: The cross-sectional study comprised 28,297 working-age participants from Indonesian Family Life Survey 5th wave (IFLS5). Survey’s data from questionnaire and physical examination were utilized. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyzed the association of hearing problem self-report and other predictors. For meta- analysis, we browsed database from January 2000 ~ July 2022. We analyzed the pooled odds ratio (OR) of hearing problem and hypertension with random effect model.
Results: The hypertension self-report was a significant predictor for hearing problem (OR [95%CI], P value: 2.715 [1.948~3.785], <0.001). Having a general check-up was important for hearing problem detection (2.192 [1.54~3.121], <0.001). There was a significant association between hearing problems and adults in 26~35 years who had isolated systolic hypertension. In the meta-analysis, a total of 379,157 participants of working-age from 14 studies were analyzed. The prevalence of people who had hearing problem with hypertension was 4.57%. Compared with normal hearing group, the pooled odds ratio of hypertension for hearing problem in random-effect model was (OR [95%CI]; 2.39 [1.94, 2.95]) and the heterogeneity was P <0.10.
Conclusion: This cross-sectional study indicated that in hypertension self- report and having general check-up had a predictive value for hearing problem detection in adult 26~35 years old in Indonesian population. Based on the meta-analysis result, a significant link between hearing problem and hypertension was exist, although the prevalence of that group was small in whole population. So that, the hearing loss evaluation might target the working-age population and might include the blood pressure assessment, history of hypertension and noise exposure.
