Background: Dementia causes physical, psychological, social, and economic impact, not only on people with dementia (PwD), but also on their caregivers. As a result, the World Health Organization developed an online self-help skills and training program for caregivers of PwD--the iSupport for Dementia program. Meanwhile care staff play a significant role in educating caregivers of PwD with caretaking skills, therefore it is important to investigate the perspective of care staff towards the iSupport for Dementia program. Currently there are no previous work has thoroughly examined program for caregivers of PwD from the perspectives of care staff, and currently lack of systematic educational program for caregivers of PwD.
Aim: The aim of this qualitative study is to explore care staff’s perspectives towards burdensome problems and solutions among caregivers of PwD and the iSupport for Dementia program.
Methods: The content of the iSupport for Dementia program would be translated and localized to Taiwan version. A semi-structured, in-depth, and one-on-one interview study design will be used. Snowball sampling strategy would be implemented to recruit care staff from geriatric psychiatry ward, dementia centres and elderly service centres. Content analysis will be used for data analyzation. Software MAXQDA of version 2020 would be used for generating codes and graphs for analysis.
Results: In total, 15 care staff participated in this study. Four themes were formed namely “Bitterness among caregivers of PwD”, “Dominating the usage of iSupport for Dementia program”, “iSupport for Dementia program in care staff’s mind”, and “Advocate of family of PwD”. The perspective of care staff towards burdensome problems and solutions among caregivers of PwD and the iSupport for Dementia program were determined from the four themes.
Discussion: Findings from our study mostly consistent with that from the previous studies. Caregivers of PwD are facing various burdensome problems which could be identified by PwD’s condition and the difficulties in care taking. The iSupport for Dementia program could provide great solutions to caregivers of PwD in relate to their burdensome problems.
Conclusion: Interviews from this qualitative study idenfitied that the iSupport for Dementia program could provide effective solutions to solve the burdensome problems among caregivers of PwD. However, modifications among the iSupport for Dementia program are still needed in order to round out the program. Further studies are needed to be conducted to investigate the modification and effectiveness of the Taiwan version of the iSupport for Dementia program. The findings have implications in terms of education and clinical practice.
