    Biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics (CaPs) comprising β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and hydroxyapatite (HAp) were synthesized by the mixing of the propagated Scleractinian coral and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA, CaHPO4) followed by the heat treatment at a temperature of 1100 °C. The effects of heat-treated duration from 1 hour to 7 days were examined.
    The as-prepared coral and coralline-derived biphasic CaPs were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The biocompatibility of the biphasic CaPs was evaluated by in vitro cytotoxicity assessment using mouse fibroblast cells. The bilateral femoral defect rabbit model assessed the effect of the coralline-derived biphasic CaP bone graft on the early local tissue reaction and biodegradation rate.
    Based on XRD, FTIR, and Raman spectra confirmed the co-existence of β-TCP and HAp at 1100 for 1-hour heat treatment, and with the increase of heat-treated time, the ratio of HAp/β-TCP increased. The coralline-derived biphasic CaP comprising 61% HAp and 39% β-TCP (HT-3) did not exhibit cytotoxicity evidencing its biocompatibility. Furthermore, no significant differences in local tissue reaction were observed between the HT-3 and autogenous bone. The residue of HT-3 was 72.85±9.87.
    The coralline-derived biphasic CaP with HAp/β-TCP ratio of around 6/4 was synthesized by the mixing of the propagated Scleractinian coral and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA, CaHPO4) followed by the heat treatment at 1100 °C for 3 days, which was suggested as an ideal candidate for bone graft due to the well biocompatibility and no adverse effect in the tissue response.
