Many studies have found that low concentrations of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) has good and wide range of disinfection. Currently hypochlorous acid has been gradually used in food sterilization, environment cleaning and inhibition of pathogenic bacteria breeding, and could even be used on human skin or wound sterilization, help wound repaired and healing. Although it has been confirmed that hypochlorous acid couble be used without irritating the skin, but it is still uncertain that the cytotoxicity for the more vulnerable epithelium without stratum corneum. Direct contact with air environment, nasal cavity could be filled with many pathogens which can cause allergies or respiratory infection, so if effectively reduce pathogens retention and breeding in nasal cavity, maybe couble improve the degree of allergy and opportunity of infection. This study is the assessment of cytotoxicity against hypochlorous acid on human airway epithelial cell line (A549 and BEAS-2B). The results were analyzed for cell viability and mitochondrial biosynthesis and function. The effect of using different treatment time and 3.5-100 ppm of hypochlorous acid on cell lines was observed and compared with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) which often used for sterilization. These results showed that compared to sodium hypochlorite hypochlorous acid has low cytotoxicity on human airway epithelial cells. 3.5-60 ppm hypochlorous acid in short-term time treatment not only does not affect cell viability and function, and even further helps cell proliferation and promotes mitochondrial activity.
