    Title of Thesis: The Mediating Effect of Coping Strategies on the Relationship between Mental Health and Quality of Life among Indonesian Female Migrant Workers in Taiwan

    Background: Mental health is a major concern among migrant workers through the world. The relationship between mental health and quality of life is well recognized, however, the role of coping strategies that may involve on this relationship in migrant workers is sparse.
    Objectives: To investigate the relationship among depression, stress, anxiety, coping strategies, quality of life and to examine the mediating effect of coping strategies on the relationship between mental health problems (depression, stress, anxiety) and quality of life.
    Design: Cross-sectional study design
    Setting: The study took place in six major cities in Taiwan.
    Methods and Participants: A total 500 Indonesian female migrant workers in Taiwan completed five questionnaires: (1) demographic information; (2) the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale; (3) the Brief COPE (4) the WHOQOL-BREF. Pearson correlation, t-test, one-way ANOVA, hierarchical multiple regression, mediation test to estimate direct and indirect effects with bootstrapping analysis were conducted.
    Results: Coping strategies was found to act as mediator among Indonesian female migrant workers in Taiwan. Substance use, behavioral disengagement and religion were found to partially mediate the relationships between depression and quality of life. Substance use and behavioral disengagement were found to partially mediate the relationship between anxiety and quality of life whereas denial, substance use, behavioral disengagement were found partially mediate the relationship between stress and quality of life.
    Conclusions: Coping strategies played the role as partial mediator on the relationship between mental health problems (depression, anxiety, and stress) and quality of life. It is important to provide health promotion such as training periodically and developed counseling facilities for Indonesian female migrant workers in Taiwan to understand, assess and overcome the potential problems of depression, anxiety, and stress. Further intervention for facilitating the effective coping strategies should be properly delivered in order to improve their quality of life.
