Abstract: Objective: This study aimed is to determine differences in the smile esthetics following orthodontic surgical treatment in skeletal class III malocclusion and identify cephalometric factors affecting the smile before and after surgery.
Material and Methods: This restrospective study included 34 patients who were treated with Surgical Orthodontic treatment at the orthodontic department of Taipei Medical University Hospital. Hard and soft tissue were measured using lateral cephalograms tracings, and smile esthetic variables were measured using facial photographs. The different measurements were divided into three groups according to cephalometric, displacement and smile analysis. A sample-paired T–Test was conducted to compare the pretreatment and post-treatment variables. An independent-paired T–Test for female and male subjects was performed to identify predictors and finally a Pearson’s correlation analysis was performed to identify factors affecting the smile measurements regards asymmetry and age.
Results: The T-test analysis showed that buccal corridor, upper lip height, smile index, lower lip height, vertical inclination differed significantly among the smile variables. Female and Some of smile, cephalometric and displacement characteristics were correlated with malocclusion, surgery and asymmetry.
Conclusion: Smile variables differed significantly after the surgical orthodontic treatment. Smile cephalometric and displacement characteristics were related to the malocclusion, surgery and asymmetry further research is suggested to strengthen the findings obtained in this study.
