摘要:	Background: To determine the factors that affect adherence to antiretroviral treatment among patients living with HIV/AIDS in Swaziland Method: Outpatients receiving Antiretroviral treatment (n =180) were asked about variables related to adherence and to complete a questionnaire that was divided into 6 sections covering personal and demographic data, individual factors, socio-economic, medical treatment and health systems data. Patients were classified in 2 groups depending on whether adherence was 100% or <100%. Adherence was defined as the extent to which individual’s behavior in terms of taking medications, follows a certain diet and executes lifestyle changes following agreed recommendations from a health provider (Sabate, 2003). Chi-square test was conducted in order to define statistical associations between the dependent variable and independent variables. A logistic regression analysis was employed to analyze how each significant variable affected adherence. Results: Data showed significance to these factors after a chi-square test was conducted: Knowledge of the purpose of ARVs, if ARVs cure HIV; Lifestyle, consumption of alcohol; forgetfulness; to whom HIV status was disclosed; support; financial resources; Multiplicity of pills; patient-provider relationship and lastly age group. All variables including the non-significant variables were included into the binary logistic model to optimize the results. This model considered 7 variables; age (95% CI 0.148 - 0.735), alcohol consumption (95% CI 0.081 – 0.676), trouble remembering to take ARVs (95% CI 0.060 – 0.822), forget to take ARVs ( 95% CI 0.050 – 0.890), people afraid of patients ( 95% CI 0.997 – 256.10), the experience of loss of income when attending at the clinic (95% CI 0.141 – 0.718) and taking medication at the same time every day being a distraction to daily activities ( 95% CI 1.120 – 6.304) Conclusion: Recommend special intervention to emphasize adherence for younger patients, patients, those who consume alcohol, those who have trouble remembering to take their ARVs and those who forget to do so. Reinforcing dissemination of information about HIV through the media to the population in order to minimize stigma and discrimination of HIV positive patients.
