At present, there are more than 171 million people with diabetes around the world. It’s expected the number will reach 366 million by 2030. In 2010, Taiwan have about 1 million to 1.2 million diabetic patients that is one death every one hour and 4 minutes on average, and the mortality is 22 people per day. Diabetes is the 5th leading cause of death among Taiwan, and the mortality is also increasing. The rising prevalence as well as the prevention and therapy of diabetes have been regarded as very important issues. Therefore, many scientists are urging to develop novel medicine or functional food to improve the diabetes.
Vitis thunbergii var. taiwaniana (VTT) is rich in resveratrol, quercetin, and other polyphenols. Those compounds have been known to improve the hyperglycemia in several experimental models. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic properties of VTT in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) mice. First, the alcohol extracts of VTT leaf, root, and stem were used to examine the hypoglycemia effects in STZ-induced DM mice. However, three kinds of alcohol extracts did not have any inhibitory effects in blood glucose level. Second, the hot water extracts of VTT leaf and stem were given to the STZ-induced DM mice for 4 weeks. Interestingly, only leaf extracts significantly decreased blood glucose level but the stem extracts did not have any effect in blood glucose level. Third, the STZ-induced DM mice were begin to examine the glucose level after feeding with hot water extracts for 30 minutes. The hyperglycemia were obviously reduce between 2 and 3 hours after feeding the leaf hot water extracts of VTT. In addition, pancreatic tissue sections from STZ-induced diabetic mice found that leaf hot water extracts of VTT have the protection of pancreatic β cell function. These results suggest that leaf hot water extracts of VTT exhibited hypoglycemia activity, and might be developed as functional food to prevent diabetes mellitus.
