INTRODUCTION: There have been many studies conducted on the topic of Problematic Internet Use and its correlation to life and mental health satisfaction amongst high school and college students; however, there has never been a study geared towards this problem in middle-aged and older adults. The internet has become more readily accessible via computers and smartphones. This study is focused on whether or not middle-aged and older adults are affected by this problem.

METHODS: We distributed a questionnaire modeled after Dr. Kimberly Young’s Internet Addiction Test to 1,391 participants throughout all of Taiwan. We used random stratified sampling with data from the Executive Yuan and other government sources to determine our participants. A few of the questions were modified to better fit the needs of our study. A total of 877 of the 1391 (63.05%) responses were deemed appropriate for our study.

RESULTS: 697 (64.4%) participants were deemed low risk of developing PIU while 180 (20.5%) were deemed moderate or high risk of developing PIU. Overall patient life and mental health satisfaction was positive and satisfied; however, Education level, marital status, and whether or not the participants had children were more significant factors in affecting life and mental health satisfaction.

CONCLUSIONS: Although there was some significance between risk of developing PIU and life & mental health satisfaction, we believe that other significant variables played a bigger role. Therefore, we believe that the risk of developing PIU is not significant in terms of life and mental health satisfaction when compared to these other variables. However, we believe that with different variables and time, this study may be deemed significant in the future.
