Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between dietary energy intake of nursing home residents with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and nutritional status. Design and Methods: This is a cross-over study. All subjects had estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 60 mL/min/1.73m2 and did not accept dialysis treatment. Twenty-four advanced CKD patients were recruited from nursing home in Taipei in 2009. The 24-hour dietary record was used to calculate the dietary energy intake. All subjects were separated into 2 groups whose dietary energy intake was adequate or not. The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) score was used as nutritional status marker. Results: Only 6 subjects had adequate dietary energy intake. However, subjects with sufficient energy intake did not have significantly higher GNRI score, but they only had significantly lower body weight (P < 0.05). Besides, their total calorie intake was not significantly different with other subjects. Conclusion: In this study, we do not find any correlation between dietary and nutritional status in advanced CKD patients in nursing home.
