Abstract: Purpose: To find out if the Alternate Healthy Eating Index for Taiwan (AHEI-T) score is associated with obesity of adolescents. Design and Methods: This is a cross-over study. Six hundred and twenty-eight junior high school students in north Taiwan were recruited in 2007. The AHEI-T score was calculated by self-reported dietary records (2 weekdays and 1 weekend). The range of score was from 2.5 to 97.5, and higher score mean better dietary quality. Subjects were dichotomy by AHEI-T score, and the median score was 42.9. Body mass index (BMI) over the recommendation from Department of Healthy in Taiwan was considered obesity. Percentage of body fat and waist circumference was also collected. Results: Fifty subjects completed the study. Twenty-three subjects were obesity, and three subjects were over-weight. The AHEI-T score was from 33.2 to 69.1, and it was significantly negative correlated with BMI, body fat, and the circumference of waist (p < 0.05). Subjects with AHEI-T ≥ 42.9 were 4.2 times more likely to have lower obesity risk (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Adolescents with higher AHEI-T score and better dietary quality had less obesity risk. AHEI-T may also be a good dietary index for evaluating the improvement of obesity in adolescents.
