On April 22, 2011, Ms Serena Chang and M. Paul Chun from the Eden Foundation gave a presentation on “The Role of International Campaign to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munitions Coalition in Promoting Global Human Rights” at Taipei Medical University within the framework of the Global Health in Practice forum.
This forum introduced the global problem of anti-personnel landmines and cluster munitions and the challenges that landmine and cluster munitions survivors are facing today. During their presentation, the speakers presented the work of ICBL (International Campaign to ban Landmines) and CMC (Cluster Munition Coalition) as a voice for landmine and cluster munitions survivors to end the global inhumane weapons epidemic.
In particular, the successes of Ottawa Convention in 1997 and the recent Convention on Cluster Munitions have proved that civil society can play a significant role in making new international humanitarian norms. These two international conventions have radically changed the conduct of warfare provide legal tools to protect basic human rights.
The presentation discussed how a local NGO, Eden Social Welfare Foundation, participates in a global humanitarian movement by providing humanitarian aid and advocating the issue. Following this, also shared how global civil societies work together for the monitoring mechanism.
At the end of the forum, participants were invited to right their names on colorful stickers and to stick them on a board to show their support to the ban of landmines and cluster munitions.
