    摘要: The purpose of this study was to assess the possible parental effects on Body Mass Index (BMI)
    status of offspring. A total sample of 160 college students, aged 20~22 yr, were recruited from class
    Taipei Medical University in 2007 and 2008. The risk of the offspring being overweight when one
    of the parents was overweight relative to both parents were of acceptable weight was 1.2. The
    relative risk for the offspring with overweight mothers to be overweight was 3.0, which was higher
    than the value of 1.9 for offspring from families with paternal overweight. Using the same reference
    category, the relative risk for having an overweight offspring was 4.3 under the presence of both
    parental overweight. The findings of this study highlight the idea of parental effect on BMI status of
    offspring and suggest that overweight parents are more likely to have overweight offspring than
    parents of acceptable weight. But for amore comprehensive effect of parental BMI upon offspring
    weight status, further study is required.
